Okay, no corny intros today. Stressed out, not sleeping, killer migraines. But I think
I can find it in me to talk about the Great Akbar Give-away. I'm sure
you've heard about it, so I won't waste your time with explanations. The short and short of it is
that any parts you bought after July 24th or buy in the future will disappear
after 3 months (90 days). Anything you owned before July 24th is safe. And
wouldn't you know it, some people aren't happy with these changes!
First off, why is Whyville doing this? Because Akbar's Mall and all our face
parts puts SO much strain on
the servers. Because the servers won't be carrying such a big load in the future, I translate
it to mean less server crashes. And I don't have a problem with the changes
because I understand why it needs to happen. Do I necessarily like it? No, but I can live with it. Maybe it pushes some people to work a little harder on their
salary so they can afford parts, but hey, isn't that what Whyville is all about?
There is one thing I have a problem with, however. I want to warn you all that if
I see one more person suggesting that we delete the plot system again, or one
more Senator candidate promising to abolish the houses to make room on servers, I
will slap that person silly. Why? For a number of reasons, actually.
I realize that there is probably an alternative if someone's willing to work for
it. But either way, someone is going to come out of the deal unhappy. However, I can
tell you that more people will come out unhappy in the long run if we were to
completely remove the plot system. Sure, it's not a big deal to some, but
it's only a temporary solution to a permanent problem.
By taking out the plot system, you obviously free up some server space, but I have a hard time believing that it's enough. Sure, it might be fix for a while,
but what happens in 6 months, or a year from now when City Hall finds that once
again there is too much strain on the database? They'll have to start removing
parts anyway! That means that we would be out our houses AND our face parts.
Understanding this, the current situation looks better to me.
Is losing your face parts really THAT bad? Great designers are
making better parts everyday! And now, in two years you'll be able to have parts
that no one else has. Somehow, that makes me happy.
