Thursday, August 14th. 5pm to 6:25pm.
In the Greek Theater today, the three Senate candidates (JayR, Giggler01, and JayR) were brought together by City Hall, Bigfoot, turnip and other city workers to participate in Whyville's first-ever public political debate. Questions ranged from face parts to the expansion of Whyville to the possibility of Why-Welfare, and each candidate responded admirably. Below, you can read a transcript of the debate.
These three citizens announced their platforms in the City Hall poll booth weeks ago, and were the only ones to get their petitions into the polls, having earned well over 600 signatures or more at the time of this publication. Despite the popularity of the senate race, even now only these three made the polls.
The final stage of the election has begun! Cast your vote now, from the announcements page when you first log in. Voting will be open for about a week from today. The candidate's platforms will remain available in the Times, so make sure you're informed about the issues before you vote!
City Hall: Okay. I'd like
to welcome everyone to our first Senate Debates.
City Hall: We have two of our
three candidates here,Amazing and Giggler07
City Hall: Bigfoot, could you
please help seat the candidates? They can both have a podium,
since we only have two.
Bigfoot: OK
City Hall: We're waiting for
Giggler to arrive; she was disconnected.
JayR: MY GOD FINALLY
JayR: I COULDN'T GET IN SORRY
PEOPLE
JayR: I BEEN TRYING
City Hall: Great!
Welcome! Now we're waiting a sec for Giggler
JayR: i had a whypass this room
is telling a lot of people out there that the room is full
Bigfoot: Go ahead, City Hall...
City Hall: I will ask a
question, and then the 3 candidates will take turn responding.
Giggler01: terribly sorry
again. Hopefully it won't happen again...
Giggler01: internet service
provider is having some problems
City Hall: Do you think it is
okay for Whyville to carry advertising? If so, what kind
(pop-ups or banners, etc.) and where (everywhere or in some places)?
City Hall: Amazing will go
first. You have 1 minute.
Amazing: Yes, Advertising would
be great, including for money purposes! I think they should be in the
mail area and
Amazing: In the waiting roo
City Hall: Thank you,
Amazing. Giggler, you're up next. Bigfoot, could you please
seat her at the podium?
Giggler01: If a company
sponsors us, such a bank, then having their adds in the bank I think
would be alright....
Giggler01: However I am not a
fan of pop up adds and think that it should nto be too much
Giggler01: And certain
companies, depending on their policies should not be allowed to
advertise
City Hall: Thank you
giggler01. Your time is up. JayR, you're next.
Bigfoot: We appear to have lost
JayR
Giggler01: =O
Amazing: this is going to take
a while
Giggler01: >> yes
City Hall: We'll have to move
on and let me have a chance to answer this question later.
Amazing: too bad i have to go
in 30 mins
Giggler01: alright
City Hall: Okay, 2nd question.
City Hall: Do you think there
should be welfare and charity programs on Whyville? And if so,
how might they work so as to not discourage citizens from earning
their own salary?
City Hall: Giggler01, you're
first.
Giggler01: I think there should
be limited charity when you first get started and grandma's is a good
example
Giggler01: It gives people a
start but also pushes to work
Giggler01: I am a firm believer
that people shoudl EARN their clams, not be handed them
JayR: that lurking too long
deal has got to go
Giggler01: but I do believe
that sometimes everyone needs a bit of a boost
City Hall: Candidates, please
say 'done' when you're done, so I know.
Giggler01: done
City Hall: Okay, JayR, please
answer this second question first, and then you'll also get extra time
to address the first one.
JayR: the advertising?
City Hall: The current question
is:
Bigfoot: The question is
advertising -- does it belong in Whyville, and to what extent?
Giggler01: some of these
tricky. You gotta be careful!
JayR: if you can control
advertising from getting in the way like spyware does then go for it,
but if it starts to
Bigfoot: Er, no, that was the
first one, sorry!
JayR: deliver pop ups whenever
a user joins on this site then it wouldn't do us no good but cause
troubles
JayR: so keep it to banners to
avoid problems later and success with money....done
City Hall: okay. The
2nd question is about welfare and charity programs. How do
you think they can be structured so that citizens aren't discouraged
from making their own clams
JayR: whyville and can from
then on make there own clams
JayR: but the charity is just
the boost they need to get started
City Hall: thankyou.
City Hall: Is Amazing around?
Giggler01: Amazing is trying to
get in but there's too many peopel in the room
Amazing: =\
JayR: there she is
Giggler01: welcome back
Amazing: thanks
Amazing: ok
City Hall: Great! Your
answer to the 2nd question please Amazing
Bigfoot: Did you get the second
question, Amazing?
Amazing: yes i did bigfoot
Amazing: Although i am strongly
against Welfare, i do think that there should be a charity
Amazing: Although, the Charity
should be regulated and people only get a certain amount one time
City Hall: Please say done when
you are done.
Amazing: When the charity
opens, money will be hard to come by, so whyvillians should be required
to donate some, evenif only 1
City Hall: Thank you. Here comes the 3rd Q.
City Hall: If there is one
thing you had to get rid of in Whyville in order to save expenses, what
would it be?
Bigfoot: Who's first?
City Hall: I think it is JayR's
turn to go first
JayR: ok some of you might get
mad about this answer but i would get rid of the houses, lot of people
can't get plots , new
Giggler01: lol
JayR: whyvillians and some old
like me, still never get plots, and faceparts are obviously the most
important to citizens
JayR: so i would sacrifice
houses to gain server space and save money
City Hall: thank you.
Next up is Amazing.
Amazing: Like Jayr, i would get
rid of plots, even though, I myself have one
Amazing: I have noticed that
plots are being used less and less by those who own them
Amazing: So, instead of plots,
i would think that a Hotel, or Appartments might take up less space on
the server
Amazing: So that people could
still have a private-like chat room, but it would also save money
City Hall: Thank you, your time
is up. It's Giggler's turn.
Giggler01: I used to use my
plot a lot, but they aren't working anymore. I would rather fix them
then get rid of them
Giggler01: Instead, I would
liek to get rid of all the things that don't work but are still taking
up space
City Hall: such as?
Giggler01: Such as the BBSes in
Club Why and the Illuiosn BBS
Giggler01: Or clean out the BBS
int he Times
Giggler01: And someone has just
mentioned trophies. That would be another thign too
Giggler01: lots of smaller
things do add up
City Hall: Okay. This is the first question where the
candidates didn't all agree.
City Hall: Does Amazing or
JayR have a rebuttal to Giggler's proposal?
JayR: I will, trophies are an
award
Amazing: i will too
JayR: and currently there
aren't enough rewards on whyville in my opinion
JayR: which is why i mentioned
getting a scholarship fund started
JayR: to honor whyvillians for
outstanding achievements so don't rid trophies
City Hall: Thank you.
Amazing, you also have a rebuttal?
JayR: as for the BBS, maybe one
central location
Amazing: yes
Amazing: but i also have a
question for jayr
City Hall: Please, you also
have a minute
Giggler01: SO do I
Amazing: I do not like the idea
of one central bbs, i believe whyville has done it before, and it
was confusing
City Hall: Please ask what you
want, and if we have time, JayR can give a quick response.
Amazing: Plus, i enjoy and use
the BBS's scattered throughout the site
Amazing: Although, i have to
agree with Giggler01 about the trophies
City Hall: Okay, Giggler01, you have a minute to respond to your
opponents comments.
Giggler01: First off, where do
you display your trophies if you don't have a house?
Giggler01: And is there not
another way of rewarding people without trophies?
Giggler01: I mean, raising your
salary and having a high salary is a reward
Giggler01: I don't think a
central BBS ould be a great idea either... somewhat confusing
City Hall: Are you done?
You are pretty much out of tiem.
Giggler01: And finally... I
have met peopel that love their plots more then their face parts and I
could nto imagina taking them aw
Giggler01: now I"m done
City Hall: thank you.
Moving right along then.
JayR: can i answer her?
JayR: ok
JayR: trophies stay in your
satchel for viewing, you can always look in and see what you acheived
City Hall: How is Whyville doing in terms of educating its
citizens? What can we do to improve?
JayR: whyville does a great job
educating the citizen
JayR: all i recommend now is a
language/culture center
JayR: and an arts program such
as a drama team
JayR: we do good on matters of
science and other subjects
City Hall: thank you, your time is up. Amazing, your turn.
Amazing: This is sort of a hard
question
Amazing: I believe that in the
beginning, whyville did a great job, but i think whyville has changed
into...
Amazing: Well, into more of "a
glorified chat room" as i read in the times
Amazing: I would love to see
even more educational things, even maybe a debate team for later
Senator debates
City Hall: Your time is
up. I hop you're done. Giggler01, you're up next.
Amazing: =)
Giggler01: I thinkt hat the oppurtunities to learn are there but
many citizens aren't motivated to participate in them
Giggler01: I think that
difernet programs shoudl also be added to include a variety fo interests
Giggler01: I feel liek
soemtimes no one uses the material for critique club or media hour
Giggler01: but those are stillg
reat programs
Giggler01: I thinkt he key is
motivating people, really
City Hall: Thank you.
Next Question.
City Hall: Many citizens are very devoted to Whyville and spend
A LOT of time on the site. Is there a point at which
someone is too devoted? If so, what is this point?
City Hall: Amazing, your answer
please.
Amazing: Oh no, im one of
those "too devoted" people, i can tell you that
Amazing: Although, about a year
ago, i spent a better portion of 5 hours a day on here, but now, im
lucky if i can use an hour
Amazing: People shouldnt do
this, because life outside is so great!
Amazing: I hope it doesnt take
anyone else 3 years to discover this
City Hall: Thank you. Next is Giggler01
Giggler01: I think all
candiates should be willing to help
Giggler01: They shoudl spened
som tiem on Whyville, but it should not consume you
Giggler01: Even if you work on
larger projects you plan for a bit everyday, they still get accomplished
Giggler01: It's important to
live outside of a virtual world, but still be active in Whyville. And I
too have experienced the same
Giggler01: consumption as
Amazing
City Hall: Thank you. JayR, your turn.
JayR: i think that it's great
that a citizen can have a passion and be devoted to a website, i like
to meet citizens like
JayR: that, and it only makes
whyville a better place
JayR: the only way one can be
too devoteed is if they start to neglect there real life duties,
such as homework
JayR: and chores
City Hall: Thank you.
City Hall: We are running out of time, but I'd like to do a
section of the debates that pertains to our candidates platforms.
Amazing: =\
Giggler01: >>> thanks
City Hall: I'm going to ask
each candidate a question about his/her platform. After he/she
responds, the other two candidates will each get to ask
something. Then the original candidate will be able to respond to
them.
City Hall: Giggler01, you're on
first.
City Hall: In your platform,
you proposed a great number of improvements for our city. To
implement them, we need a lot of additional funding. How do you
suggest we do so?
Giggler01: I feel I have enough
iniative to find funding ina variety of ways
Giggler01: I want to bring back
the ability to pay for Club Why in real money
Giggler01: As well as find
sponsors
Giggler01: And sell more
merchandise, such as kits and REAL games
Giggler01: I do believ the fund
ing is there, but I will call on citizens to help me get it
Giggler01: It's possible
City Hall: thank you. JayR, would you like to ask
Giggler01 something about her platform?
JayR: ...no i do not sorry
City Hall: That's fine.
Amazing, please go ahead.
Giggler01: Amazing, I have a
basic idea of sponsors that I woudl liek to contact
Amazing: Would you have other
whyvillians look also?
Giggler01: I think that talking
to the right people will make it possible
Giggler01: I woudl liek them to
send out a pretyped letter that would take all of 30 seconds, nothing
more then that
Giggler01: to aspecified e-mail
address. Copy paste and you've helped out Whyville!
City Hall: Okay! Thanks, candidates. Let's move on
to Amazing's platform.
City Hall: Amazing, in your
platform, you expressed disappointment in the way that some citizens
behave. How do you propose improving this situation?
Amazing: Ah, yes, for one, a
charity will help lessen the clam begging that most whyvillians get
Amazing: As for other behavior,
people are always going to be getting out of order
Amazing: I'm not sure one can
do much about it, but make penalties stricter
City Hall: Thank you.
City Hall: Do the other candidates have questions for Amazing?
Giggler01: I do
Giggler01: You says stricter
penalties, but many people are already upset with the harsh rules
alreayd set in place.....
Giggler01: is there anything
else you would consider?
City Hall: JayR, do you have
questions for Giggler's platform?
Amazing: There is a reward
program for those with good behavior
City Hall: JayR, you
proposed a scholarship fund in your platform. How do you plan to
select for the recipients?
JayR: i would form a committee
who would be interested in selection for this fund, and we would meet
once a month, take
JayR: nominations
JayR: from citizens or make
recommendations from something the committe itself may have seen
JayR: and we would pick the
best candidate for that month
JayR: based on certain
criteria...done
City Hall: Okay. Do the other candidates have questions
for JayR?
Amazing: IDO
Giggler01: I do
City Hall: Amazing, you can go
first.
Amazing: 2 questions
Amazing: IS this whymoney we
are talking about jayr?
City Hall: In the interest of
time, please just ask one.
JayR: yes clams
Amazing: Wont you favor your
friends?
JayR: no i don't play favoritism
JayR: the goal is to reward all
whyvillians not my friends
Bigfoot: When we're done here, if the candidates are able to,
you can all have a free-for-all question session afterwards...
City Hall: Okay, giggler01, please take the podium.
City Hall: I'm guessing you are
typing a long question...
Giggler01: JayR, I feel that me
and Amazing participate in more activites in Whyville when elections
aren't happening. How can.....
Giggler01: citizens be sure
that you won't just disappear after the election until the next time
around?
JayR: did i disappear when i
won prom king? i'm always here for whyville, if you haven't noticed my
face parts are evidence
City Hall: thank you.
Giggler01: Does beign a good
deisgner qualify yout o be a Senator?
JayR: and the same question can
be asked of you giggler
JayR: no but it means i
spend alot of time on this site
JayR: more than you nkow
Giggler01: alright
City Hall: the official debates are over. Each candidate
now gets to make a closing statement. Just one bubble please!
Giggler01: I'd like to see more
of you around Whyville thing sucha s the media hour and times hwoeber!
City Hall: Amazing, please
start.
Amazing: I would like to make
it clear that i cannot promise whyvillians anything w/o concent, but i
will do my best, that i prom
Giggler01: Thank youa ll for cominng out and for your
support!
JayR: i would like to thank
all whyvillians for there support in the senate race, i will do my best
to try to help all of us
City Hall: I applaud all our candidates. Thank you for
coming and sharing this historic event with us!
City Hall: clap clap clap clap
clap
