According to my trusty bus, Whyville has 515,871 citizens. 515,871! That's more
than the population of Wyoming! And how many people do we have managing
Whyville? Almost a dozen city workers and one senator... who although is remarkably
organized, responsible, and competent, has numerous other obligations in her
life. Yes, these people do a great job running Whyville. But don't you think we
should help them out? Imagine how much the citizens of Whyville could accomplish
if we all worked together!
I think that Whyville should install a group of
committees responsible for accomplishing certain tasks in Whyville. These
committees would be composed of willing citizens who had excellent records and
were able to pass a test (there would be different tests for different
committees). Here are a few ideas I have for committees:
The Welcome Committee: Would help newbies get started by: writing
tutorials and instructions for games, setting up a newbie help center, and
pairing willing newbies with an experienced "buddy" who could help them out for
a week or two. Would lighten the load of the ymail helpers.
The Activities Committee: Responsible for organizing cool
activities in Whyville. Could plan scavenger hunts, clubs, dances, comedy acts,
etc. Could award prizes for weekly competitions such as creative writing
contest, goofiest face part contest, best joke contest, etc.
The Homework Help Committee: Would help people with their
homework. The tutors could include people knowledgeable in a variety of subjects
and levels.
The Friendly Chat Committee: Similar to the Safety Patrol. Would
inform citizens about chat rules, submit censorship suggestions to city
management, and be alert for offensive or dangerous language
The Sponsorship Committee: Would be responsible for finding
companies to sponsor Whyville. Would also prepare fill-in-the-blank letters that
regular citizens could send to companies.
The Science Committee: Would help people on Whyville learn more
about science. Members of this committee would post scientific articles in the
times, hold weekly lectures/debates about interesting scientific topics:
(cloning, aliens, endangered species, etc.) and submit cool science facts that
could be posted on the welcome board.
There are just a few ideas to get people thinking. I'm sure you can all come up
with lots more. So what do you think? Would committees be a good idea? Would any
of you be interested in joining one? Should a clam bonus be part of committee
membership? Tell City Management what you think and they'll do their best to
help. After all, they're working for us!
Your humble public servant (haha),
