A while ago, I authored an article dealing with the Y-Helping system, and spoke
on many of the frequently asked questions about becoming a helper and their
roles in the online community. Since then, I have had several questions
regarding this same topic and new, old, and curious citizens have been asking
questions about the Y-Helping system.
It is fine-and-dandy that so many individuals are applying for this position. I am sure that the workers of Whyville are
thrilled with such a response.
However, with the number of citizens seeking this rank, the competition is
troublesome, I feel. Therefore, I believe that *new* rules should be established to ensure
that only the most deserving candidates are chosen.
So far, I have seen no real need for Y-Helpers. There are several on-call at all
times, with older citizens arriving to answer mail from time to time. It is
already a
requirement that a Y-Helper be a citizen of Whyville for at least 3 months. He
or she must earn a daily salary of at least 60 clams per day, and pass a test
distributed by City Hall and company. Although this may seem challenging to
some, it is really not as difficult as it *should* be.
For example, with all of the cheat websites around, it is pretty much effortless
to obtain a salary of 60 clams per day. In fact, it would take you a day of
non-scientific research and a bit of help from a citizen who has already been
through "the ropes". Many know-it-all individuals have completed more difficult
tasks -- such as the Solstice Safari -- and have obtained a salary over 100 clams.
In addition, many citizens are not aware of all aspects of Whyville in three
short months. It may take *some* much longer to learn about the games, the safety
tools, the layout of Whyville, etc.
Let us look at some of the existing Y-Helpers. I have a chart to
show that these four surpass the rules set by City Hall by maintaining a
salary rate of far above 60 clams/day, and are involved in other activities.
