Chapter 3

Now the response was different.

"We'll surrender!" most all of the people cried.

"Good," said the aliens. "Now get into the ship."

So many people clicked, City Hall was not sure that anyone had resisted. Then she saw that seven people had stayed, cowering behind chairs and sofas and everything else there was to cower behind.

Oh, no! she thought. If they don't move, they'll be incincerated!

Then something happened in the cockpit of the UFO. The glass was smashed by something flying out of it... it was the pilot! City Hall zapped the alien before anything could rescue him.

There was a fire in the cockpit! KA-BOOM!!! It blew up!!!

Smoke was everywhere! Karra's house was burning! Dead and dying Whyvillians littered the ground, most of them wearing big purple sunglasses.

Then, suddenly, they started disappearing! The aliens and Whyvillians were disappearing! And the smoke was disappearing too!

"So we meet again, City Hall."

City Hall jolted with shock. "Who's there!" she cried out.

"Why, I'm insulted! Don't you recognize your old friend, The Thing?"

"The Thing?" City Hall looked at the purple mist. Slowly two light spots were forming into horrible-looking eyes.

"No, Batman," said The Thing sarcastically. "Whyville is mine, City Hall! Give up The Key!"

"No," said City Hall, "Whyville isn't yours. It isn't mine, either. It belongs to the citizens."

The mist swirled violently. "Give me that key or I'll ---"

"You'll do what, you great windbag!?" 7 cut him short. He was leading a swarm of Whyvillians. "Fire!" he cried. Suddenly the air was full of beams. Pieces of severed purple mist fell, turned grey, and withered away.

"Arghhhhhh! Nooooooo!" The Thing cried "Nooooooooo! Stop! You cannot! Nooooooooo!"

As the last bit of it fell to the ground, The Thing said, "You -- win for -- now -- but I'll be back -- and then -- Whyville -- will pay...."

And with those last words, The Thing faded from sight.

THE END (or is it?)
