I found Jill20's "Encyclopedia of Useless Information" and the following
articles so
fascinating it made me do a little research of my own.
My research led me to Milton Hershey. That name sound familiar? Yup, he founded
Hershey Foods Corporation, the makers of Hershey's chocolate! I've always been a little curious about the stuff myself,
so I'm going to share what I learned with fellow useless trivia lovers.
Hershey was born almost 150 years ago, in September of 1857. When he was 18
(in 1876, for those of you keeping track), he opened his first candy shop, which
failed after 6 years.
Luckily for us, our good friend Milton wasn't the kind of person to give up
after just one failure. So, he moved to Lancaster in 1886 to open the Lancaster
Caramel Company. He started making caramel, but he realized it couldn't retain
an imprint of his name in hot weather. So, he switched to chocolate. His
chocolate-flavored caramel (!) had always been a good seller.
In 1900, he sold the company to move his focus to just chocolate, and from there
we leap to today, 2003.
More random facts about Hershey:
- Today the company's main plant in Hershey, Pennsylvania uses about 700,000
quarts of milk each day!
- Storage silos can hold 90-million pounds of cocoa bars.
- The company is the largest single user of almonds in the U.S.
- Hershey used his profits to open the Milton Hershey School
