Wow. It's true -- advertising has come to Whyville! No, I'm not talking about
the plane dragging shop owner's ads over the town square, I'm talking about a real-life
company -- Adobe!
You may have noticed the tiny "Adobe Digital Kids Club" sticker in the Times, or
the larger banner at Akbar's. My question is, is this really the best Whyville can do?
Some of us may have known it must be coming: With the new mall, there needed to
be some new funding. However, I was surprised to see these sticker-like ads. I thought Whyville was more creative than that!! Why don't we have an Adobe Photo Shop
booth in the mall, where Why-Citizens can get their picture taken, while
advertising Adobe?
Also, I have some questions for anyone who can answer them...
1. Are Why-Citizens' e-mails still safe?? There's no plan to release them,
correct?
Editor: From what I understand, that is correct. We have no
plans to release our citizens' email addresses to another company, and we
certainly wouldn't do it without your permission.
2. Are you planning to make pop-ups?
Editor: There's some controversy about that among the city workers.
Some of us think pop-ups are insidious, while others say that you folks know how
to deal with them -- and if we put advertising in all the obvious spots (the
Mall, the Times, etc), we can earn enough money to pay for everything.
It's been a hard choice not to just take any old pop-ups and banner ads, let me
tell you! But everybody at City Hall wants to give you folks the best
experience possible, and we've agreed so far that pop-ups just aren't a part of
that. For now, anyway.
3. What is Whyville's relationship with Adobe? Are they becoming sponsors, or
just advertisers?
Editor: As I understand it, Adobe has taken out a full-page ad in The
Whyvillian, has the ads you pointed out on Whyville, and has offered city
workers our pick of the coolest Adobe software. :) Most nifty!
Thank you, Times Editor, for answering my questions.
Am I disappointed with the ads?
Yes.
Will I live?
Yes.
Much Love,

Editor's Note: Just to let you know, we would love to set up an Adobe
Photo Shop or some other Whyville activity sponsored fully by Adobe. We
think they're nifty people, and they seem to feel the same way about us.
But business like this sometimes needs to go one step at a time -- the first
step are these ads. The next step will be, hopefully, a bigger investment
and thus a cool Adobe-related activity. But first, we need to show Adobe
that it's worth their time to come to Whyville -- so head on over to their
website, check it out and tell them what you like about their site! Who
knows what might happen...?
