Brrr! Hullo, fellow Whyvillians -- ShortHart here, to make your day a little more
ShortHarted. (I dare you to think of a better word, LoL!)
So, I'm at a loss for topics to write about, and I really want that title of
"Times Writer," so I'm just going to make a list of some of my favorite books
and discuss them a bit. Actually, I'm writing this in hopes that it will just
get some creativity flowing, because I really love to write for this paper! (No,
I'm not sucking up! ;-) Anyway, on to the article!
A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Madeleine L'Engle: Although you really don't have to
read the first two books in the series to understand this one, I really
recommend it, but this is my personal favorite. Well, one Thanksgiving, the Murry's
and O'Keefe's are getting ready for dinner when the telephone rings. It's a
call from the President asking Mr. Murry for advice. Mr. Murry is regularly
consulted by him, but this time, the President is trying to find a way to stop a
madman from declaring war. And not just any war, but nuclear war! Well, the Murry's
have 24 hours to save the world -- can they do it?
Bloomablity, Sharon Creech: Dinnie has been kidnapped! What's worse, it's by her
aunt and uncle. Dinnie's family has started to fall apart and her mom thinks
it's a good idea for her to go live with her aunt and uncle at their new
boarding school in Switzerland. Dinnie's traveled from state to state all her
life, never staying in one place very long, but she doesn't feel ready to adjust
again, especially without her family. After a little while there, she meets new
friends, and starts having fun, but the whole time she's worried about
forgetting her family. Will she ever adapt?
The Series of Unfortunate Events, Lemony Snicket: This is a series, yes, but you
can't read just one-and you HAVE to read them in order! They tell of the Baudelare orphans and how they go from guardian to guardian being chased by a
villain trying to steal their fortune! Along the way, the are trying to find out
the secret of VFD, an organization which could help uncover the mysteries behind
their parents tragic fiery death. Also, the author is telling of his own
tragidies, with tons of humor of course! They're predictable because they never
end happily, but the surprises along the way, and the telling of the story both
make for a great way to spend your day, sitting in a dark alley-way
contemplating whether it would be safer to read the book or take your chances
with the rabid dogs about 3 yards away. The later being the safest, and least
depressing of course! LoL!
Well, that's all the time I have to tell you about these great books, because I
just HAVE to read another one!
Off to play "PATTY-CAKE,"
