Everyone knows that along with the holiday hustle and bustle surrounding the period
between Thanksgiving and the New Year comes the time when humanity starts to
actually think about itself. Every year, organizations such as Toys For Tots,
Operation Christmas Child and the Salvation Army's Angel Trees help provide
children all over the world with joy and happiness on Christmas morning or
Hanukkah or Kwanzaa.
But you know what? I was talking to a social worker who
goes to my church and she told me that the holidays is the top season for
giving. In actuality, the needy, the poor and those who are less fortunate than
us need help all year-round. In July, people are just as likely to go hungry as
in December or November -- maybe more.
What really annoys me is that people never even think about others less
fortunate than they are in May, or June, or July. Older people who live alone
and don't have air conditioning for whatever reason may die of heat stroke in
July, all alone in their
houses.
There's something that every one of us can do about
this. Try to think about the needy all year round. Below is a calendar of what
you can do every month to help those in need.
January: Collect coats for those who need them.
February: Send a valentine to a shut-in.
March: Visit a nursing home and spend time with an older person.
April: Bake a cake for firefighters or policemen.
May: Have a canned food and other non-perishable food items drive.
July: Help serve food at a homeless shelter or a soup kitchen.
August: Volunteer at a local animal shelter.
September: Hold a yard sale for charity.
October: Have a Halloween party at an orphanage.
November: Have a turkey drive. Get everyone you know to donate a bird or money
for those without.
December: Pack a box or three for Operation Christmas Child. Do an Angel from
the Angel Tree. Participate in Toys For Tots.
These are just a few ideas for things you can do to help. Try it! The rewards
are endless!!!
Signing off to help the needy,
