Hey, Whyville! Yes, it is I, chilibean! I know I haven't written in awhile (you
know how it is, school, family, friends), but something recently grabbed my
attention that needs to be reviewed.
I logged in today and couldn't decide what to do. Then it came to me. I thought
to myself, "I haven't been to the petition booth in a long time. Maybe I should
go check it out!" However, I was very disappointed when I got there. What did I
see?
"FIRST 125 PPL TO SIGN THIS GET 125 CLAMS" "800 CLAMS FOR VOTERS!!!" "SIGN
AND ILL GIVE U 1000 CLAMZ!!!"
Can you guess what bothered me about these
petitions? No, it wasn't the obsessive use of the caps lock. No, it wasn't the use
of poor grammar. (OK, maybe the grammar a little bit.) It was the fact that Whyvillians
were using bribery to get their petitions passed. To make things
worse, there are several of these petitions that earned enough votes to reach
the poll stage, as I write
this article. That means that people actually signed these petitions, thinking
they would receive money. Admittedly, many of these signers were probably new to Whyville.
This is just an estimate, but I'll bet that 99.9% of those voters did
not receive their clams.
And why should they get clams? It's against the rules to bribe in order to get
your petition passed. If someone attempts to bribe for votes,
City Hall simply ignores the petition. Doesn't matter what's in it -- it gets
IGNORED. Think that over the next time you have a
really great idea for Whyville.
I don't know about the rest of you, but when I look at a petition like these
things, I'm
not going to vote for them. It tells me the writers are being dishonest. They are
so concerned with getting their petition passed that they will do anything to
get it through, even lie. Now isn't that just sad?
Well, I really must be going. I have Christmas Pageant to attend. Just remember,
if you see someone trying to bribe, report them to City Hall!
Have a great day!
