Sometimes stress can really take over. To avoid getting grouchy, irritable and
pained, here are some quick tips to relieve you of day-to-day (or other) stress:
1. Light a few candles. Girls, and boys, if you dare, try some scented ones.
Lavender and jasmine are natural, relaxing scents (think aromatherapy).
2. Steam yourself, inexpensively. Get a cup of tea (peppermint works well) and
put your face above it, eyes closed. Once finished (when you feel relaxed, or when
your face gets plenty moisturized), drink it up!
3. Meditation = relaxation. Stretch out and get your muscles, especially your
hamstrings, nice and limber. Cross your legs and sit loosely and comfortably,
preferably on a bed or on the floor. Try to rid your mind of all thoughts and
focus on your breathing. If you don't feel too silly, try a mudra with your
meditation. In short, mudras are certain hand positions to draw certain
energies. The 'chin' mudra is the one you generally see, with the thumb and
index finger touching, the rest outstretched.
4. Acupressure. For a tension headache, run the index and middle fingers of
both hands along the eyebrow line until you feel a little indentation. Apply
pressure there and rub in slow circles. For a stressed-out stomach ache, place
the index and middle fingers of one hand in the center of the breast-bone (try
not too giggle, guys, you have one, too :-D) where there's a tiny indentation.
Apply some pressure and rub in small circles. It'll be about where the chest and top
of the abs meet. With acupressure, always remember; only press until you feel a
'good' hurt, like when you stretch stiff muscles.
5. Go for a walk. Fresh air really clears your head, I can't explain it. It
helps for me when it's cold out, because the air is more... crisp. But this may
just be because I'm a prairie chicken. :D Different strokes for different folks.
6. Roll your eyes. LoL, don't laugh! Sore and dried out eyes can cause your body
to feel stressed. Close your eyes and roll left, right, up, down, and all
around.
7. Drink some water. When you become dehydrated, your mouth sends signals to
your brain, causing you to feel very stressed and sometimes exhausted. The
interesting thing is, you don't have to swallow -- the second the water touches
your tongue your body feels less dehydrated. But that's just a little side-fact.
Swallow!
8. If all else fails, I have two words for you: Bubble bath. Water stimulates
your brain cells, literally sending your stress down the drain. Bubbles,
candles, and music add to the psychological part; aromatherapy is effective (and
it smells good), and music can literally change a person's mood. Play any song
with a strong emotion going, and you'll feel different by the end.
