Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy G. Thompson, announced Tuesday,
Dec. 30 that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking steps to
ban ephedra, an herb used to help promote weight loss and improve
athletic performance. There is evidence that ephedra does have "small
beneficial effect," but the FDA warns that the harmful effects outweigh any
positive ones.
The FDA won't officially ban ephedra for weeks, and after
that companies have 60 days to conform. Meanwhile, the FDA has issued a "consumer alert "
warning people to stop using products that contain ephedra. Also, the FDA sent
letters to 62 companies that manufacture the product warning them that the FDA
will be "enforcing the rule" to ban ephedra, as the courts have ruled it
is dangerous.
Steve Bechler, a pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles, died last February after taking
a product that contains ephedra. However, there is no
actual proof that his death was caused by ephedra.
I obtained the following information from
http://content.health.msn.com/content/article/79/96033.htm.
