As most of us know, the Summer Olympics will be taking place in... Athens,
Greece! It's my family's homeland (I'm Greek), and also the Olympics' homeland.
If you don't get this, let me explain:
It all started on the plains of Olympia, where the residents played a bunch of
challenging games to
find out who was the strongest, fastest and so on. They were awarded with a wild olive wreath that
was worn on their heads. In 1896, people held the first, officially
international Olympic Games, in Athens, Greece. So... we're back to where we
started!
The Olympics have entries from just about everywhere in the word. People
from New Zealand, Australia, the USA, Canada, Greece (of course) and many, many
more compete.(And it's not only the Olympics that are coming up this year, it is the year
that Bush moves out of the White House! If you are from the U.S., you know what
I am talking about.)
The Olympics are made up of many different categories, such as games taking place
in the water (swimming, diving, water polo...), outside and on the track (track
racing, hurdles, the long jump...), and of course, gymnastics. It also includes
wrestling.
Through all my years, I have really enjoyed watching the Olympics, and I hope you will
too!
This is athena92, signing off.
