This article is in response to Giggler01's announcement that Whyvillians would be voting on whether to allow confederate flags in our town.

This is a hot issue, not only in Whyville, but in real life, every day. Many states are still allowed to fly the confederate flag, even in front of schools. Because I'm from California, I have a different view than those people in the states where the flag is actually flown.

We actually had a poll about the confederate flag in my class, and only two people thought that the flag should be flown. This is because all of our classes have taught us that the flag basically means slavery. And if you fly the flag, you condone slavery, which is wrong. But I'm sure all of you knew that slavery was wrong.

But is it wrong to have a confederate flag? Sure, it's linked to racism, and slavery, and things that are bad. But for some, it's a symbol of their past. It's not a bad thing for them. It's just a symbol of their relatives and how things used to be. So there's one argument that it's okay....

But is it okay to have a swastika? Of course not! Or is it okay...? It's linked to the enslavement of Jewish people.... It's linked to hate. But believe it or not, some people think that it is a symbol of their past, of their country. It's not a symbol of hate to them. So should it be all right to have it up??? Editor's Note: The swastika was also an important symbol long before the Nazis took it over... can it be cleansed of what the Nazis turned the swastika into?

This issue spans on to words. The "N" word is a VERY dirty word to some people. Basically, when you say it, people get offended. Yet some people still use it casually. Because they are not offended by it, they think it's okay to use it. But did you know that people think words should be taken out of the dictionary merely if you're offended by it?

The word PLANTATION nowadays offends people. Did you know some people actually want to get the word plantation taken out of the dictionary? And this brings me to my #1 point. People are TOO touchy. Not that I think it's okay to hang a swastika wherever you want, or call anyone you want an "n" word, but people are getting out of hand! Plantation is not an offensive word. No matter what you say, it's not. Unless there is some hidden meaning, it's not an offensive word.
