Ok, honestly, who doesn't love small, furry things? There are many things that
you can do to help these poor animals.
Thousands of animals are ending up in shelters after being found on the street
or being dumped there by their owners.
The fix? Volunteering at an animal shelter or adopting an animal are obviously
great ways to help this and keep this from happening. The best thing you can do
to prevent a pet overpopulation is, of course, getting your pets spayed or
neutered.
Animals (millions) are also being bred and hunted to make clothes, furniture,
and jewelry.
The fix? This one is easy -- don't buy products made of animals. Did you know that
20 years ago, baby harp seals were hunted and almost put on the endangered
species list just so they could be made into clothes for us? Today, they are
protected by law and the numbers of them are steadily increasing and recovering.
What happened, you may ask? People, angry people, wrote letters containing their
concerns. That is something you and I can both do to help out.
Every year, thousands of frogs, mice and even cats are killed to be used in OUR
classrooms.
The fix? Today in the classrooms, they have created programs that are
simulations of real dissections. Talk to your teacher in advance so you both
can come to an agreement if your school does not have these programs. Don't be
afraid to speak up, though: just remember, many of the rules set today were set because a
student spoke up.
