Following fast on the heels (NOT!) of our first Whyville Talk Show, our second event features guest "Coach Jay" Stallings.
Coach Jay shows his players all the right moves, he helps them practice, he
takes them to tournaments, and he peps them up when they're down. Sounds
familiar? Probably, but Coach Jay doesn't coach football or baseball; he is a
professional chess coach! If you've seen the movie "Searching for Bobby Fischer" you'll
know well how important a chess coach is for each and every player.
When asked about his favorite thing about teaching chess, Coach Jay says, "The
best part is when they tell me about how they beat their parents, grandparents,
and other grown-ups. Remember, in chess size doesn't matter!"
Coach Jay is someone who turned a favorite hobby into a career. He is the
founder of a non-profit organization with a mission of "empowering youth to grow
through chess." This organization, the California Youth Chess League, now
teaches chess in 28 schools in and around Santa Clarita, CA. Coach Jay is the
director and has 15 part-time coaches who help him with over 1,000 kids in the
program.
Whether you play chess, checkers, or tic-tac-toe, playing games (even the game
of life!) is all about strategy. Come to the Greek Theatre and meet Coach Jay on Saturday, March 27, at 3:00 p.m. Whyville Time and wheedle him for some pointers -- you never know when they'll come in handy!
