On March 27 at 3:00 p.m., the second Whyville Talk Show took place at the Greek
Theater! The featured person was Coach Jay, who teaches chess! We asked Jay a
lot of questions, and I'm going to give you a brief description of what his
answers were.
Coach Jay is from Santa Clara, California. His father taught him chess when he
was five years old. He graduated from the University of Texas. Jay had a career
in International Business, but then decided to have a career in the game he
loves most, chess.
Now he coaches around 1,000 kids! How, you may ask? Coach Jay has 15 part-time
coaches helping him. He has also written several chess books, but they aren't
sold in bookstores. They are mainly for his students.
Why play chess? Coach Jay
says, "Chess helps you think logically and quickly, plus you get to meet people
from around the world!"
Coach Jay is also the founder of the California Youth
Chess League, which is a non-profit organization. Their website is
www.cycl.org,
but Jay says he needs to update it.
Some other facts about Coach Jay is that he plays 5-10 chess games a day,
winning about 95% of them. Also, he says that to improve you should join a chess
club, play a lot and ask players for advice.
Another game Coach Jay plays is Stratego, which is similar to chess.
I had a great time at this event, and I can't wait for the third Whyville Talk
Show! Oh and thank you for coming, Coach
Jay!
This is softbll12,
Waiting for the next event!
