What is one thing that most everyone loves to chew? Bubble gum! You
can buy it all most everywhere. It comes in millions of flavors (peppermint,
spearmint, cinnamon and of course bubble gum! among many others) and a variety of colors. But
where did this chewy treat come from?
Chewing gum as we know it was invented in the late 19th Century and was a huge hit. It was
invented by Thomas Adams. He found out??about its great texture when he put a
piece of chicle from Mexican sapodilla trees in his mouth. He was originally trying to make a
new kind of rubber! He tried making boots, masks and toys before tasting the
stuff. (Imagine toys out of
gum!) After giving the stuff a chew, Adams immediately opened a factory and sold his discovery for 1 penny
apiece under the
name "Adams' New York Gum No. 1."

Other important gum dates:
1928 -- Double Bubble was created
1906 -- The first actual bubble gum was created but never sold (If I was the
inventor, I'd be hitting myself on the forehead
right now if I knew how big that would get!)
1914 -- Wrigley's Gum was created
1899 -- The first Dentyne gum
Famous chewers of sap and tree gum include the Ancient Greeks, the Mayans,
American Indians
and the first American settlers.
So, next time you pop a piece of gum in your mouth, think of all the great gum
chewers before you!
Going to go chew some gum,
