Hello Whyville! I would like to take a little time out of my not-so-busy life to teach you a little about a practice called "meditation." You probably know what meditation is already, or maybe you have already tried it. Just to refresh your memory, though, meditation is most frequently described as "Consciously directing your attention to alter your state of consciousness."

If you didn't quite catch that, let me simplify it: Meditation is basically altering your consciousness, by directing your attention at... anything! Anything could be colors, objects, sounds, thoughts, visions, etc.

Meditation is used for spiritual growth, finding your inner light and wisdom, and connecting to your inner self, your spirit. Some other uses for meditation include: Healing, cleansing, balancing, intuition, finding inspiration and creativity, guidance, or just finding relief from stress.

Now that I have covered a few of the basics, allow me to show you a couple of great methods I have found (and tried).

First, there are a few simple things to avoid when meditating. Never try to force something to occur. Most likely, if you are new at this, near to nothing will happen. I know from experience. Don't worry, though; after you have tried meditation a few times you may achieve what you were hoping for.

Also, don't attempt to drive out all thoughts and distractions. Trying to do so will only distract you further. Simply acknowledge, then dismiss any interruptions, and continue.

Before beginning, find a peaceful place where you find it easy to relax. It helps if it is secluded, where you are unlikely to be interrupted. (I use a spare bedroom in my basement.) Try to eliminate as many potential distractions as possible. Turn off any televisions or radios, etc. Sit down in a comfortable position, straightening your spine. It is better to lean against a wall or backboard, so as to keep your back relaxed. Place your hands and legs in any position that is comforting for you. Take a few deep breaths, now you are ready to begin.

The first type of meditation I will show you is relaxation meditation. This one is quite simple and easy, and effective, too.

Maintaining your comfortable position, let your eyes fall downward, and gaze idly while not directing your attention immediately at anything. Allow you eyelids to drop to a comfortable level, while not closing them entirely. Continue to gaze downward for a period of time, still not focusing on anything in particular. Ease your breath into a soothing rhythm. If your eyelids are becoming heavy, it is okay to close them now. This method of meditation is great for stress-relief, or a quick recharge.

Now, here is another method called mindfulness meditation. When practicing this meditation, the main goal is to maintain a calm awareness, and to let thoughts and sensations flow, while not becoming enveloped by them.

Again, in your same relaxing position, sit comfortably with your eyes shut. Breath slowly, listening to the sound of your breath. When any thoughts or distractions occur, merely accept them instead of attempting to ignore them, and let them pass while not becoming involved. Continue to focus on your breathing this way, in a calm manner.

The last method I would like to show you is the one I find most intriguing. This one is called inner light meditation. It is an excellent way to connect with your inner self, and while it is simple, it can be very powerful.

Sit in a comfortable manner, with your eyes closed. Idly watch the black space behind your eyelids. Relax, and allow particles of light to form. Watch them evolve into shapes and visions. Don't by any means try to control what you see, or affect it in any way. Simply let things take form. The experience should be quite enjoyable, and soothing. If your attention returns to worldly thoughts, merely draw it back to the lights and forms. This meditation is also relaxing, and good for the inside and well-being.

Well, that is all for now. I hope you try these out. They are well worth it -- utilizing meditation regularly is actually considerably helpful for your life-style, and happiness, too. So give it a try!

This is Saahy... off to experience the benefits of cosmic connections! :D
