The world was torn in two
Allies versus the Central Powers
Who would win?
How many men would die in the fight?

Competition over militarism
Led to the split
Whose army was bigger?
Who would have more technology?

Alliances split Europe into two,
Like children playing kickball.
Who had the strongest side?
Allies or Central Powers, you decide.

Imperialism led to fighting over land.
Countries needed more wealth.
So they took over poor African territories.
Soon they were fighting for the same colonies.

Nationalism, the belief that your country
is better than all other countries
Everyone believed this,
But, whose country really was the best?

It didn't have to happen.
We didn't have to fight.
It didn't have to end up like this.
We didn't have to lose so many men.

Then the U.S. became involved.
We didn't have to enter into the war
We tried to stay neutral
But, Germany began to upset us.

They used their submarines to blow our ships up.
They sent the Zimmerman Note,
Promising Mexico to defeat us.
We could take it no longer.

Woodrow Wilson tried to keep us out.
He tried to keep us neutral.
But we could take it no longer
And had to enter the World War.

The Allies and the Central Powers fought it out.
Millions of men died,
And more were wounded.
Who ended up winning the battle?

The Allies won the war.
Enemy territory was split,
Germany ended up in debt.
And all because of World War I.
