We all were there, the day we had no looks. Saturday, March 20, 2004. The influental date that changed our lives forever...

Okay, I'm exagerating. So sue me!

Still, it was quite surprising. There were no faces whatsoever. Everyone in all the chats looked like 'newbies'!

I asked CityWorker ScyllaCat for details on what happened, and here is what he told me:

Hey tiga0013,

Yeah - I heard that on Saturday (March 20), the server that draws everyone's faces got into a bad state. When that happens, everyone gets newbie faces.

But it sounds like everyone had a lot of fun (sort of) on 'newb day'! I'll let the other City Workers know that it was a wacky day.

Thanks for letting me know.

ttyl!!!

:)

Apparently there was a reason. Even so, while quite confusing to talk to people (everyone looked the same so if the person you were talking to suddenly moved and you weren't paying attention, it was a bugger to try and find them again), it was also a good thing.

See, the only way to separate the 'newbies' from the 'olbies' was by looking everyone up and remembering their names and how long they'd been coming. First off, who would go through the trouble of looking EVERYONE in the chat up in city records? Not a lot of people. Secondly, who would remember it all? Most probably nobody, because remembering things even for a short time (a great amount of things) would be nearly impossible.

So, we were forcced to either keep our big mouths shut, or talk to anyone. We probably talked to 'newbies' without even realising it, because we all looked alike! Preps might have talked to goths. =-o Shocking!

Prejudices had to be dropped for at least that one day, and that was good. So, 'Newb Day' (as it is now aptly called) may not have been that bad of a thing. Sure, it was confusing and we couldn't see faces, but barriers were broken. Prejudices slapped in the face. Friends with people that you'd never dream of befriending.

'Newb Day, or 'New Day''. It possibly spawned the most new (and unexpected) friendships all year. It might have been the best day in whyville history.

This is Tiga0013 signing off.

Editor's Note: I've actually been making my case with the City Workers for years that we should have a regular Newbie Day, to recognize that as fun as our face parts are, we can in fact get along without them. Learning to be good people is more important than learning to make pretty faces, don't you think? What would happen if we all looked exactly alike, that's what I ask -- I think we'd still find ways of being individuals, beautiful or otherwise, and we'd realize it all comes from within. But what you do YOU think of this idea? What do you think of the accidental newbie day? I've heard rumors this has happened more than once... what's it like for you all?
