I've heard all kinds of things about aspartame, a.k.a. NutrasweetTM. That's the sugar
replacement that you find in Diet CokeTM and other sugar-free products. Is it all rumor or what?
I did
some research on the Internet because I wanted to find out what
people are saying about Diet Coke. Here's what I saw online. Is any of it
true??
Diet Coke has its own web page (NOT IMPORTANT!!!)
Aspartame is poison (really?)
Aspartame is a drug that makes you think what you're eating or drinking
tastes sweet (I wonder if that is how it works?)
Aspartame gives you migraine headaches (I drink Diet Coke but it never gave ME
a headache.)
Aspartame breaks down into diketopiperazine (something that causes brain
tumors?)
Okay, those things sound true, but somebody better do some real thorough
research (maybe even an experiment???) to find out for sure. In the meantime, I think if people don't drink TOO much Diet Coke
they should be fine. I drink diet Coke about once a week. I have never had
anything bad happen to me because of Diet Coke. (Not yet!)
I will continue to research this delicious drink. L8er Days everyone!
-Andrea96Editor's Note: Wow! You'd be amazed what kind of
information is out there about aspartame. These folks even set up a
"toxicity center" about it online:
http://www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/. The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration, on the other hand, says there's not a consistent problem with
the stuff -- you just have to make sure you don't have certain illnesses that
interact badly with aspartame. For more, check out this:
http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/qa-adf9.html. If you want to skip these
folks' explanations and arguments and read a really good summary, check out this
website for parents:
