This past week, Whyvillians flocked to the polls for our community's third senatorial election ever! Almost 16,000 votes were cast

The winner, by just under 4% of the vote, is Sonner!

This veteran Whyvillian has been a citizen since September 30, 2001. His platform emphasized improvements for Whyville businesses, and his victory today may indicate the first time a Senate Race was decided by the Whyville economy!

Sonner is a member of the Safety Patrol, citizens selected by City Hall to help corral misbehavior in our town. He is also a long-time Times Writer.

His first article, "Freshly Pressed" was published on March 14, 2002. He quickly got involved in writing about social ills of Whyville, from scam artists like SkUmBaG68 to the price of WhyPasses. Sonner has been involved in nearly 40 Times articles.

At last week's debate, Sonner proudly announced he had reached #1 in the ongoing SmartCars tournament -- quite an accomplishment. He has the highest games-based salary in Whyville, and is an accomplished face part designer as well.

The voting in this past week's election could be broken down like this:

  • Sonner - 6,353
  • Brian98 - 5,772
  • BabyPowdr - 3,865

The three candidates ran an especially pleasant race, even cheering for one another with honest praise (and some pretty gentle questioning) during the Senate Debate before a packed Greek Theater on April 23. While there was no clear winner at the debate, the event gave voters plenty of food for thought as the candidates grappled with issues such as restocking fees in the Face Factory, the objectivity of reporters who run for office, and the danger of turning the Senate into a "clique" of friends.

Congratulations to Sonner, and to Brian98 and BabyPowdr! It was a tight race between three highly qualified candidates. Whyvillians chose each of you as the cream of the crop -- we hope you enjoyed it!

The official Inauguration will be held sometime in the next two weeks, depending on Sonner's schedule. He will take the oath of office in the Greek Theater and may deliver an inauguration address. If you come, you may also see Senator OrEoBaBy, who's currently two months into her six-month term.

The next Senate race will begin in late May. Think about your platforms, and join us at the Senate Meetings when you can!
