Ugh. State testing -- SAT's, OSAT, CAT/6, whatever they are, they cause us teens major stress! I, personally, just finished with state testing, and I am so relieved!

When we have tests at our school, we are given STRICT instructions: (1) DON'T TALK! (2) Read everything CAREFULLY! (3) Choose the best answer, and don't spend too much time on one question. (This last one is their way of calming us down. HA!)

So anyway, I'm here to help you out. I have five tips that I use every time I have testing, and they calm my nerves and help me de-stress.

1. Take up yoga. I started doing yoga when they offered classes at the gym I go to, and I've stuck with it ever since. It's a great way to get fit if you're not the athletic type (like me), and it helps you de-stress and sleep better. Speaking of which....

2. My next tip is to go to sleep at 9:00 p.m., at the latest. I know I hate having a "bedtime", but getting a good sleep can really boost your brain juice for those tricky questions... (is it A or is it C?)

3. If yoga isn't your thing, there is always working out, riding your bike, or even taking an aerobics class. If you think that doing things like that would boost your energy and make you not sleep as well, WRONG! I sleep my best when I do something athletic before I go to bed. Also, make sure you drink a lot of water before, during, and after your workout. My mom's personal trainer told me this; it has something to do with your muscles retaining water, I think. Basically, if you have enough water, you won't be as sore the next day.

4. Play some calming music before you go to sleep. I bought a CD that has wave sounds and rain on it, and it makes me fall asleep instantly, and STAY asleep.

5. When they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, they weren't kidding! (Can someone tell me who "they" are? That gets me so confuzzled....) Eat something like Cream of Wheat or Quaker Oats. Even a healthy cold cereal will do it. Don't just eat a low-carb bar and call it done. I'm lucky, my school serves free breakfast, but if yours doesn't offer breakfast, be sure to eat something good in the morning.

Well, there you go. Five tips for those icky tests. Remember, they aren't the end of the world. When your teachers tell you to relax, they aren't kidding.
