Hello, this is DiGsTeR02 again. Today I would like to discuss something that
I have been eager to write about ever since I first became perplexed by this
thought.
For most of you who have visited the Warp Wagon, and live in the Eastern Time
Zone area, you probably have been wondering, "Gee, why does Whyville go by my
time if it is located off the west coast of California??"
I had this very same question in my mind when I found where Whyville is
located in the Warp Wagon map. I live in the Eastern Time Zone area myself, and
this confused me... (Note: It was 6:36 p.m. where I live when I took this picture.)
After seeing this, I felt the need to interview a few people to get their
thoughts. First, 725step.
DiGsTeR02: Why do you think that Whyville goes by Eastern Time and not
Pacific, when it is located on the Pacific Coast?
725step: I think they do that because many people are in the Eastern Time. If
more people go by the Eastern Time, then they will go by Eastern Time instead of
Pacific. But I personally think that they should have it where their location is
(Pacific Coast.)
DiGsTeR02: Very good point. I totally agree.
Then I talked with LeFtHaNdY.
DiGsTeR02: Why do you think that Whyville goes by Eastern Time
and not Pacific, when it is located on the Pacific Coast?
LeFtHaNdY: I think it's based on the average amount of people living on that
time zone area.
DiGsTeR02: Well, how does Whyville know what time zone we are each in? That's
what I'm curious about.
LeFtHaNdY: I dunno.
And then there was LaMoon.
DiGsTeR02: Why do you think that Whyville goes by Eastern Time
and not Pacific, when it is located on the Pacific Coast?
LaMoon: Um... well I think they made it so more eastern ppl can relate to the
same time.
I'm just wondering; does Whyville know what time zone we each live in? I would love to know the answer! Also, what, exactly, is the true reason that WhyTime differs from its location? The people that
I interviewed had mainly the
same theory as each other, and hey, maybe they're right! I never would have
guessed, if that was the reason.
What do you think about it? Please post your thoughts in the BBS. Thanks!

Editor's Note: Well, there have been many creative reasons
suggested for this, from time warps to humongous magnets to magic, but there is
in fact a dry, technical reason. Whyville was first made by folks out in
California. After a year or two, the City Workers found that the most affordable
place to rent our servers (the computers that run Whyville 24/7) was on the east
coast -- and so, Whyville time is based on the time inside those computers. I hope
I explained that right!
