If anyone has ever seen the movie "Field of Dreams", you know that many times the phrase "Build it and they will come" was heard by Kevin Costner, referring to building a mysterious baseball field in the middle of his farm. Well, he built it and they came. Now the same thing has happened in Whyville!

I popped into the Greek Theater the other day and was asked if I had visited the Newbie Center. Since I'd just returned from vacation, I replied, "No, why?" Then was told that it has finally opened!

Being a curious Whyvillian, this piqued my interest. I immediately ran off to visit the long, long-awaited center. I got to share in the experience first hand and left there very pleased.

In the Center, Whyvillians are able to ask all kinds of questions of a Helper, even before they are able to chat! (The one on duty when I arrived was City Worker scyllaCat.) What an awesome idea! You don't have to be a newbie to enter, by the way.

What a great way to welcome new Whyvillians! ScyllaCat was asked several different questions while I was there, and he did his best to answer what he could. To those that he was unable to answer, he at least referred them to what would be the best way to get their answer. Once it was my turn to get invited to the question seat, I thanked scyllaCat for doing an awesome job serving Whyville after he addressed my question.

Just a few things to remember:

1. The Newbie Center can only hold a few Whyvillians. This allows the helper to focus on helping those that are there.

2. You must wait your turn to be invited to the question chair. This way the helper only needs to concentrate on one conversation bubble.

3. When you are done or if you have no questions, please leave the center to allow others to enter.

The one thing that I would like to see added is a sign-up sheet (as in Oreobaby's Senate platform) for new Whyvillians to get together with an experienced Whyvillian for longer-term help, assisting them on their way to becoming familiar with the ways of Whyville. This way, an experienced Whyvillian can adopt a little sister or brother to help grow into a successful Whyvillian and help to make this site an even better place to visit.

Kudos to Whyville and the Newbie Center!

Respectfully submitted,
koalsie
