Hello everyone! This is Sonner, reporting on a fairly recent story mentioned by
the City Workers at the Senate Debate that I was in last month. This topic is
mention frequently in many petitions, around Whyville and to the City Workers.
This topic is, when new people start Whyville, some people believe they should
start off with clams so that they can buy things.
It may seem all fine and dandy to help new people this way, but I support the
City Workers' decision to not give out clams in this way. I am sure many of you
think I'm being mean, but there is good reason behind not giving clams to
newbies when they first start.
Lots of you are probably wondering (or know people who are wondering -- tell
them to read this article!)... why can't newcomers get clams when they start?
Well, I will tell you. Here is an example:
Let's say newbies start off with 100 clams, the first day they join Whyville.
Fine so far, right? Well, let's say that some older or newer Whyvillians are
short on clams. What would these people do? People who are strapped for clams
will just make dozens of useless accounts -- they will get their 100 clams from
each account and send it all to their main account!
Of course, some or even most people might not do this, but it's a risk Whyville
isn't prepared to take anytime soon. Imagine the flood of clams like this! I am
sure many honest Whyvillians would not send clams to their main accounts from
newly made ones, but it is the not-so-honest people Whyville has to worry about
as well.
Now, our readers may be saying, but Sonner, what if no one actually did
that? Here is my answer: City Hall said that a long, long time ago in Whyville,
newcomers actually did receive clams to start off with, just for signing up.
Also, City Hall told the people in the Greek Theater that people did in fact
send the new accounts' clams to their main accounts and then just ditched the
other accounts. Imagine all the abandoned accounts that would be created these
days....
People in the Greek Theater said that sure, this happened a long time ago, but
they believed no one would do it now. City Hall responded by saying that it
really wouldn't make a difference. Since Whyville's population is so close to
reaching the 1,000,000 citizens mark, imagine how many people could actually be
creating free clams!
Well, I hoped this article answered many people's questions about why newcomers
just cannot start out with a few clams to buy face parts. As the Times Editor
says, "That just wouldn't be the Whyville Way."
Sonner, signing off. Bye!
