As many of you have noticed, around noon last weekend, when you typed in http://www.whyville.net,
it showed a screen saying:
Hey, it worked! The SSL/TLS-aware Apache webserver
was successfully installed on this website.
Before then, I've seen a message
from City Hall saying the server was down, but I hadn't ever expected this!
Q: What is this Apache thing?
A: "The Apache HTTP Server Project is an effort to develop and maintain an
open-source HTTP server for modern operating systems including UNIX and Windows
NT. The goal of this project is to provide a secure, efficient and extensible
server that provides HTTP services in sync with the current HTTP standards."
I got the answer from http://httpd.apache.org/
-- I couldn't read the computer language well enough to explain it totally. In
English, though, I think it's a new server.
For a Q-and-A page about Apache and stuff, go to
http://www.whyville.net/manual/misc/FAQ.html#what.
I'm off to go look up the big words they used...

Editor's Note: I'm not sure it's actually a new server, so much as
the old one had a big hiccup and had to be taken offline briefly. I'm sure City
Workers like mark and neutral can explain it better, if you really need to know.
