Hello, mates! Armada here, reporting from Whyville.

Do you remember what it was like to be a newbie? I sure do. Your face was a happy little Caucasian smiley face, and visiting Grandma's hardly made it any better... everyone else is pretty, and you couldn't chat, or even send Y-Mails if you were under 13.

Or perhaps you are a newbie now? With the recent installation of the Newbie Lounge, you can ask a few questions that have been bugging you about the wonderful city of Whyville. That's helpful, but it doesn't fix everything.

Whatever the case, not chatting when just about everyone else is chatting probably isn't very fun. But here are some tricks of the trade of how you can survive those first five days! Hey, they worked for me!

1) Get your 'rents in on the action. If you are age 12 or under, because of an online child safety law, Whyville can't permit you to chat even after five days unless your parent/guardian signs a permission form.

You'll probably want to ask your mom or dad today to look over Whyville, especially if they're always busy. I asked my mom on the second day I joined, and it took her two more days to make sure Whyville was cool with her and fax in the permission form.

2) Play. Every. Game. Yes -- every single one. Even ones you totally stink on. You need to raise your salary so you can buy things in Whyville. A salary on here is a set amount of clams you get every day. You can raise your salary by playing the games -- the more you play, the higher your salary.

To see what your salary is currently, go to your Satchel (that red backpack on top of your bus), then the Ledger (black book), then pick Salary Ledger and Next Salary, which will tell you how much you will earn the next day you log in to Whyville.

Plus, if you get your salary over 20 clams, you'll only have to wait three days to chat instead of five! Go figure!

3) Go on a Treasure Hunt. This is a totally excellent way to make clams. Even though it takes a while, your efforts are SO worth it. You will usually get between 250 and 400 clams if you finish and cash your coins in, plus there's a major salary boost. The answers are simple enough, yet challenging enough. You might want to consult a history book if you are stuck.

4) Play games like Kalah, Checkers, and Tic-Tac-Toe. Some nice folks may even give you clams if you win!

5) Get acquainted with Whyville. Explore. Go everywhere and see everything. You'll want to know Whyville when you're able to chat, and by that time, you might have a favorite chat area already!

6) Change your face. If you go to Grandma's on the Destination menu in the bus, then click inside the door, then click on the table with face parts, you can get free face parts. Mind you, they are not supermodel face parts and you can only go back to Grandma's a few times as of summer 2004. But, hey, everyone has to start somewhere, right?

7) Get a Chat License. Yes, you have to. You cannot chat without it, even if your parents sent in the permission form and you waited five days. When you enter Whyville, press CTRL + F and type in License. Then click where it is highlighted and take the quiz. The answers are pretty simple, and you get to know the rules of this city as well. You'll also get a bonus of a whopping 25 clams. :)

Well, that should about wrap it up for that. Of course, you could always do more or less than what's on the list. This is just meant as a general guideline so you will learn all about Whyville and make some clams in the meantime.

This is armada, signing off.
