Don't Find Out the Hard Way!

A few days ago, I wandered into the Whyville beach, where I saw my friend from school. She was asking if anyone needed their salary raised.

This was quite shocking to me, because I didn't know she was that good at computer games! So I asked her:

Me: You can raise salaries?
Her: Yup.
Me: Then how come yours isn't any higher?
Her: I raised it. It just hasn't shown up yet.
Me: Oh. Can you raise mine?
Her: Sure! What's the word?
Me: Wait. Are you sure you won't hack?
Her: Promise.
Me: You swear?
Her: .....swear.
Me: Well, okay... but if you do take some of my stuff you have to replace it ALL!!!
Her: OK.
Me: It's ______.
Her: Thanks.

So then I logged out, waiting for my salary to get higher by the minute. I knew she wouldn't hack. I knew her from school!! You would trust your friend from school, wouldn't you?

Bad idea.

When I tried to log back in, the password had been changed! So I went to the login page and had the password sent to my e-mail. Once I got back in to Whyville, I found I had lost about 700 clams already!

I couldn't believe this girl! She was my best friend and would never hack, I thought!

I didn't know what to do. Since I have one other account, I sent all what I had left there. Meanwhile, I was appalled. How could this person do such a thing? I thought she was my friend!

I y-mailed her asking for an explanation. I asked her to replace what she had stolen since she did swear she would replace whatever was gone. I waited and waited... and waited for an answer. Finally, she replied.

"Actually, no I didn't," she said. That was the last thing I heard from her for about two hours.

After I was sure I had my account back and it was safe and secure (changed my password and moved everything to another account just in case), I wandered into the beach yet again. Who should I run into but the one who had offered to raise my salary!

Before I could start in on her she said, "I DIDN'T DO IT!!"

Well, I was already in a bad mood, and it sometimes feels like it helps if you have someone/something to blame it on. Still, we talked for a minute and it came out that she said she wasn't the one who had offered to raise my salary. She said she hadn't been on all day! Of course I believed her because I just knew she wouldn't hack!!

Even when you think you're giving your password out to your friend, it might not be them. So if you have to give them your password, make sure it's really them before you say the magic word.

Don't find out the hard way like I did. Make it easier for yourself and just listen when I (and many other people) say PASSWORDS ARE PRIVATE.

Editor's Note: Like cheertude says, don't share your password with anyone, even your real-life best friend. You never know what could happen. The risks of losing everything just don't compare to the "boost" of letting a friend raise your salary for you (I'd feel lousy making somebody else do *my* job!) or make up your face for you (just be patient and wait for the Makeover Tool to be made by the City Workers :)!
