They said that metal was cool,
You hid your Britney album.
They said Sum41 was for losers,
You suddenly hated them.
They liked the darker things in life,
You went and changed your image.
They said Kurt Cobain was a legend,
You googled him to find out who he was.
Your old friends say hi to you,
You ignore them, hoping they'll leave.
Your mother tells you to turn that noise off,
You thought it was noise too till you forced yourself to like it.
They seem so cool and casual,
You vainly try and follow.
They get tired and call you a poser,
What do you do now?
Author's Note: Some people I see around the Whyville chatrooms
prompted me to write this poem. They try so hard to fit in with certain "stereotypes"
and keep up with the trends. The kind of music you listen to seems to classify
what kind of person you are, and that's why I included a lot of music examples
in this poem.
I'm not saying that it's wrong to one day dress up as a goth, then the next
day as a cheerleader... after all, your Whyville face is just a chat avatar.
But within those two days, would you say you liked heavy metal and then suddenly
switch to pop music and say metal is just a whole lot of noise if somebody asked
you? Honestly... are you being true to yourself?
I think the right way to go is making a face that expresses you as an individual.
Oh well, it's just my opinion against a million other people's.
It's always best to be genuine. :)
