Sure, we've all heard the word. Most of us know that piracy means downloading a
movie (or recording it somewhere else) and selling it to earn a few extra bucks, right? Although we know that,
most of us don't know the facts behind it; we don't see the big picture.
Think about the movies you have seen lately. Some you may not have enjoyed so
much, while others you could watch a million times. Films can make us
laugh or cry. They motivate us to imagine, and some require us to think. A lot of
work goes into making that moving picture that you love to watch.
Usually dozens and dozens of people contribute their skills to make a movie.Because films require a lot of money, the executive producer and producer are
involved with raising funds to finance the project. They are also in charge of
hiring the director, the other members of the creative team, and all the actors.
The director works with the actors and other members of the creative and
technical team to produce the movie. A screenwriter takes the actions and
dialogue and fits them into a format called a screenplay. The unit production
manager is in charge of the day-to-day supervision of the film project
throughout the production process. The director of photography is responsible
for realizing the visual style of the film, selecting lenses, camera placement and
lighting techniques that will show the movie to its full extent. There are many,
many more people that work hard to produce a motion picture, including actors, production
designers, set designers, costume designers, and hair and make-up artists. All
those people spend months, even years trying their hardest to produce a movie
that will entertain up to millions of viewers.
What does this have to do with piracy? Piracy is illegal, and it has messed up a lot of
people's lives, from the pirates themselves to the people who make movies. A South Carolina resident had to pay over $27,000 because he
broke the law. A satellite signal pirate was caught and received a 30-month sentence to prison,
and had to pay a $2.6 million fine.
When people like that break the law, not only are they giving themselves a
chance to lose a lot of money and go to jail, they are also wasting all the
effort that people put into making a movie. Some stuntmen even put their lives
on the line so that we can have a great form of entertainment. Any way you look
at it, piracy is wrong.
Before you break the law and perform acts of piracy, think of the people that
spent months making that movie. Think of how much money you would lose if you
got caught. You could even be sent to prison. Piracy is real, and it isn't
right. For additional information on piracy you can visit http://www.respectcopyrights.org.
Think twice.
