Antoine de Saint-Exup??ry was born in Lyons, France in 1900. He was son of Count
Jean-Marie de Saint-Exup??ry and Marie Boyer de Fonscolombe, and the third of
five children. Sadly, Antoine knew his father only by pictures because of his
death in 1904. Antoine's mother made a decision to move in with an aunt who
owned an ancient castle, and there Antoine spent the happiest days of his
childhood.
When World War I hit, Antoine's mother became a sister at a hospital,
and sent him and his brother to a Jesuit school. He attempted at entering the
Naval School, but failed the examination, although he tried several more times.
Saint-Exup??ry had a soul of a pilot and he was called into the French Air Force
in 1921. At the age of 26, he became a mail pilot from Toulouse to Dakar,
along with many South African cities.
He wrote many books about his flights.
When France was occupied by the Germans, Saint-Exup??ry moved to the United
States, where he wrote his most famous piece, Le Petit Prince, or The
Little Prince.
He returned to
France to fight the Germans on the American side, although he had to use some
influence to be allowed to fly. On his ninth mission, a photography mission,
Saint-Exup??ry never returned.
