It was a foggy, 35 degree day in southern Maine, and I had just signed onto Whyville.
I went through the usual routine, read the Times, looked at Akbar's new arrivals,
and checked my whymail. I had a whymail from someone I had never talked to before,
and I thought, "Cool, maybe they wanna be friends or something." So
I clicked it.
To my dismay, it was what seemed to be a feeble attempt at hacking. The whymail
read as follows:
"I would like to congratulate you on a victory! You have won 1st place
in the drawing! 1st place recieves 2000 clams, all of fairy kiya's best selling
hairs including the hard to find latia, and also funky curls. Also you will
recieve a salary raise up to 100 clams. Now their wasa a second place winner,
who was snowgrl13 who only got a 75 clams salary raise, and 1000 clams. Now
this drawing is done in a distingt club! This club is secret, and there are
15 members, who all have atleast 30,000 clams! The drawing is done by, the first
person to enter a secret room, or maybe the 13th person to enter the room wins
the prize. It depends usually on the time, and day. It is all luck of the draw.
I am very happy to have you win. All you have to do is y mail me back telling
me if you want this prize or not, and also y mail your pw back to. Now if you
don't trust me please i am not forcing you to have this prize! The pw is to
place everything in your account without spending a bunch of clams. See this
drawing is done every month, only once though. Thankyou for reading this, and
please y-mail me back soon"
Sound a little suspicious? Yup, that's what I thought. I checked the City Records
on the person who sent the mail, and snowgrl13, who was mentioned above, and...
for both accounts, the same message appeared: Sorry, this user's page cannot
be displayed.
Now I probably will never know if they were the same person or not, but I'm
assuming they were -- or that they were accounts stolen by a scammer, who then
tried to pass her scam on to me.
Whoever they were, I decided to write this very article, to warn other Whyvillians
they might try this again. No matter how good an offer sounds, getting scammed
is definitely not worth the unlikely rewards.
I'm off to go eat some pepperoni pizza... mmmm... pepperonis...
