I went online today, April 19, and went directly to Whyville. Well, I was going
to go directly to Whyville, but something else caught my attention. It was in
my online newsletter, which had a headline that declared "Joseph Ratzinger
Greets His Flock". I knew that he had been a cardinal, so I figured out
pretty quickly that he is the new Pope!
Joseph Ratzinger is German. That is kind of funny, because before Pope John
Paul II there was 500 years of Italian popes. Pope John Paul II was Polish,
and now there's a German Pope! So much for keeping to tradition....
Joseph Ratzinger was born in Marktl, Germany, on April 16, 1927. When elected
as Pope, the 78-year-old changed his name to Benedict XVI. He is the 256th Pope
of the Catholic Church.
While a teenager, Ratzinger was enrolled in a Nazi youth group. He was let
out soon because of his studies for priesthood. He served since Pope John Paul
II and is a great choice!
I got my information from the German magazine, Der Spiegel: http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,352310,00.html.

Editor's Note: Thanks for the international flavor to your source,
ps2man1! It's interesting to see how the German news media is treating the new
pope. Perhaps next time we'll get more than one source to our articles, to see
even more variety! :-)
