Heya, fellow Whyvillians! Reading the paper, I see. Whatchya' going to do when
you've read all the articles that spark your interest? Walk around Whyville?
But what if none of your friends are online? Meh, check y-mail. No y-mail to
check! So you sit down, waiting for something interesting to happen.
That's the situation. You're bored.
So you float around Whyville complaining to others, and shouting out 'PRESS
123 IF YOU'RE BORED AND WANNA CHAT!'
You won't usually get much of a reply. So why don't you pick up a book instead?
I recommend Tithe by Holly Black. It's about faeries and pixies and the
like, if you're into fantasy. It starts off with a girl named Kaye, who meets
a supposedly-evil faerie, and it turns out she had a secret not even she knew
about. But look out, I wouldn't recommend this book for kids under 13.
There's also Eragon by Christopher Paolini. I always describe this one
as kinda like DRoP (the Dragon Riders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey)
meets LOTR (Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien). There's dragons, elves,
orcs and such. Eragon is the main character, and he finds a certain stone-type
thing in a forest, starting off his adventure. I'd say this book is suitable
for pretty much anyone who can read it.
Looking for something lighter? Try reading some manga! Manga is usually found
in the graphic novels section, and is anime... that is, it's in comic form!
But remember, manga is read from right-to-left, not left-to-right. Not all manga
is appropriate for kids under 13, or even older, so you should probably check
with your parents before picking one of these up.
I really enjoy reading Ranma 1/2 by Rumiko Takahashi. It's about a boy
who, when training in China with his father, fell into a cursed spring. Now,
whenever he is splashed by cold water, he turns into a girl. When splashed with
warm water, he changes back.
Then there's Cowboy Bebop, with art done by Yutaka Nanten and story by
Hajime Yatate. This is set far into the future, when people can travel from
planet to planet. The story follows a group of bounty hunters called the Bebop,
and is usually quite easy to follow.
Not willing to pay $15 for 300 pages of pictures? Why not try some online comics
from the comfort of your own chair!
http://nuklearpower.com/'s
8-bit theater -- This is about the adventures of four characters based on the
original Final Fantasy. The quartet has taken the job of 'The Legendary Light
Warriors'. Hilariously funny... but Fighter is kinda pathetic at times....
http://www.megatokyo.com/'s
megatokyo! It's about two gamers who take a plane to Tokyo and don't have enough
money to fly back home. The story is really funny, though there is one guy who
only speaks |_337 and if you don't know what he's saying, you might miss out
on a joke or two. This one can definitely get pretty mature, so make sure your
parents are cool with it before reading.
Not really the reading type? Why are you reading this, then? Anyway, try going
swimming or something! It's still spring in the Western Hemisphere!
Or maybe you can earn some money, so you can go shopping. What do you do when
you're bored, besides run around Whyville complaining about it? What haven't
you done in a while that you would like to do? Write about it in the BBS!
This is LilCas, signing off to go finish a book.
