Ever wanted to become a Times Photographer? Here's an easy-to-understand guide
on how to take and submit pictures.
Step #1: Get your web browser to Whyville so the screen has the picture
you want on it. (Or, if you're taking a picture of something else, get it so
what you want shows up on your monitor.) Example: If I wanted to take a picture
of myself at the Rec Room, my screen would look like this:
Step #2: Once your screen is to your pleasing, press the button on your
keyboard that says, "Print Scrn SysRq" or just "Print Screen".
On my qwerty keyboard, it is in the upper right area, between Scroll Lock and
F12. Pressing this button takes a screen shot. If you don't have this button,
you'll need to find another article to help you.
Step #3: Open up Microsoft Paint or any other picture editing program.
Once there, make a new document and click Paste, or hold the Ctrl button and
press "v." Take a look:
Step #4: Size down your picture. Select a selecting tool (Ha!) from
the toolbox and make a box around the area you want to have as your picture.
Once the area is selected, press file and click copy. (Or hold down the Ctrl
button and press "c.") If you're using Adobe Photoshop or a program
that has the crop tool, you can just crop it instead of copying to a new file.
Step #5: Now, depending on what type of e-mail service you have, there
may be different procedures, but for Microsoft Outlook do the following:
Open up a Word program. Type any accompanying words to the article. Put the
curser in the appropriate spot and hold Ctrl and press "v." Your picture
will appear.
Right-click on the picture, and select "Format object." Go to "Layout"
and click "Over text." Then click "OK."
Highlight everything and copy it again (Ctrl-C).
Now, open up your e-mail program and fill out the "To" and "Subject"
lines accordingly. (If it's for the Times, make sure you write the subject link
like the Editor has asked us to!) Then select "Format" followed by
"HTML." Go to the main text window, where you'd write your letter,
and paste the article in. (You know how, I've said it enough.)
If you have a different e-mail provider, write your article and paste the pictures
in, or attach them separately.
Step #6: READ THROUGH EVERYTHING. You need to make sure it's grammatically
correct as well as looks good... then send it!
Step #7: Be happy you did it! =P
Say cheese,
