Tsunamis are gigantic tidal waves, usually created by landslides or volcanic activity.

What happens is a violent movement of the Earth's tectonic plates displaces an enormous amount of ocean water. This causes a powerful shockwave in every single direction.

Here is an interesting fact for you science lovers: Scientists have discovered traces of an asteroid collision that they say would have formed a humongous tsunami that swept around the Earth several times. They have also said that it would have destroyed everthing except for the mountains 3.5 billion years ago. The coastlines of the continents were transformed and all life was exterminated and wiped out.

In recent events, a powerful tsunami hit southeast Asia. On December 26, 2004, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake hit the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It was the fourth-largest earthquake since 1900.

This event generated tsunamis, and they swept the coast for hours. Over 120,000 people died in this tragedy.

Now, if I am not mistaken, one of the places you can visit in the Warp Wagon on Whyville is Sumatra. If you get the chance, get on the warp wagon to visit Sumatra and give it your sympathy!
