Some of you may think that science is just a subject in school, but it is really a lot more. According to my dictionary, it means several things:

• "The state of knowing: knowledge as distinguished from ignorance or misunderstanding."
  

• "A department of systematized knowledge as an object of study."
  

• "Something (as a sport or technique) that may be studied or learned like systematized knowledge."
  

• "Knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through scientific method."
  

• "Such knowledge or such a system of knowledge concerned with the physical world and its phenomena."
  

• "A system or method reconciling practical ends with scientific laws."

My science teacher gave me his own definition. He said that science was basically studying things. It is asking questions and trying to find the answers to those questions.

As soon as I heard that, it reminded me of Whyville. Hearing his definition made me think that, no matter what you are learning while playing one of the games here on Whyville, you are learning science.

Although science may not be my favorite subject in school, it is still important to me.

Now, if science is about finding answers to questions, then without science you probably wouldn't be reading this right now. You wouldn't have asked, 'How can I learn to read?' or 'What do those scribbles on that paper mean?' Scientists wouldn't have figured out how to make computers or any of the other technology we think of as ordinary.

Just thinking about what our lives would be like without science gives me the shivers.
