Ever wonder how Canada Day started? Well you are going to find out now Canada
Day is a holiday celebrated on July 1st. Much like the United States' Fourth
of July, there are many celebrations.
It all started way back in 1867. At this time, Canada was part of Great Britian.
On July 1, 1867, Queen Victoria allowed Canada to become an independent country.
The new nation was called the Dominion of Canada.
At the time, Canada was not divided in the same way as it is now. There were
only four provinces: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
At first, Canada Day wasn't called Canada Day. It was Dominion Day. No documents
today state that there were any organized ceremonies in the early years; in
fact, the first organized ceremony was the 50th anniversary of the country's
confederation.
From 1958 on, there have been regular organized celebrations. The Secretary
of State of Canada is in charge of the coordination.
Canada's centennial was an especially big celebration. Queen Elizabeth II arrived
at Parliment Hill to take in the celebrations.
Since 1968, there have been multicultural dances and concerts at the celebrations.
On October 27, 1982, Canada officially changed the holiday's name from Dominion
Day to Canada Day. Since 1985, there have been celebrations organized in each
province locally.
It wasn't until 1965 that Canada got its current flag. That has been a big
part of celebrations in Canada.
The last thing I would like to share with you is Canada's National Anthem.
There have been many different versions written, but the one that has been the
most popular was created in 1908 by Robert Stanley Weir, a lawyer who lived
in Montreal.
