If you're like me, I'm sure you've been wondering what's been up over at City Hall recently.
First Club Why went up and caused a huge fervor. Then there was the rumor around town that Whyville was going to close down on May 1. This sparked a whole slew of citizen-run movements: the Save Our Town campaign, Operation Oprah, as well as city-sponsored features like downloading a Whyville icon and sending Whyville postcards to your friend.
Well, May 1st has come and gone, and our town is active as ever, but all is silent over at City Hall.
So what's going on?
I invited City Hall over for tea at the Times just yesterday to see if I could get some news out of her. She is circumspect as always, but here's what she said:
It may seem like we've been quiet over here, but really we've been working very hard looking for funding for Whyville. We've found a possible sponsor, and we've written a proposal to them telling them all about Whyville and all the great stuff we could do in Whyville, if they could help by giving us some money. I don't really want Whyvillians to get their hopes up yet because it's not for sure that these people will sponsor us yet, but yes, we are very hopeful!
Well, that's very exciting, and of course I couldn't let it rest at that. I prodded and prompted some more, and finally City Hall said:
Well, alright. This potential sponsor is the Corporation of Public Broadcasting.
At that point, I pretty much jumped out of my seat and knocked over my cup of tea. Corporation of Public Broadcasting! That's big. No, that's HUGE! These are the folks who sponsor public television and radio. These are folks who know quality and support quality! Check them out at www.cpb.org.
City Hall wants me to emphasize though that it's not for sure that we'll get their support. So, let's all keep our fingers crossed. In the next few weeks, there might be people from CPB coming to Whyville to look us over. Whyvillians, please be nice and make them feel welcome, because how you behave may determine the future of Whyville!
