As many of you probably know, I wrote in the Whyville Times last week, creating the first article of the series Country In the Spotlight. I was amazed at how well the topic was doing! Almost everywhere I went, people had something positive to say about the last article. I was very excited and eager to write more! Needless to say, I received so many suggestions on what country to write about next, I actually had to write them all down! I had a long list of 20 or more countries that people had suggested. I spent a long time thinking about it, and I decided that it wouldn't really be fair to choose just one, so I chose a country on my own, basing my choice on a country I think we could all learn more about. I hope you all enjoy it!
For this week's Country In the Spotlight, I chose the country of Argentina. Look at a map or globe. See South America? Argentina is located in the Southern part, shaped almost like a triangle. It is located in between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Most of the citizens of Argentina speak Spanish, and are Roman Catholic. The government of Argentina is a Republic, and their form of currency is Peso. The capital of Argentina is Buenos Aires. Some other large cities include Rosario, Cordoba, and La Plata.
Argentina is the second-largest country in South America. Many people in Argentina farm for a living, as agriculture (farming) is the chief economic activity there, as well as raising livestock (animals). The country is mostly made up of vast grassy plains, and covers about 1,078,000 square miles! More that 20 million people live there, and the population increases day by day.
What is the climate like in Argentina? The temperature is hot in the lowlands, and cool in the highlands. Argentine summers are hot and humid, but the climate is dry during the winter months. In the South, it is cool, dry, and windy year round. The rainfall varies greatly depending on the area you are in.
Want to know about the natural landmarks in Argentina? The best-known rivers in Argentina include the Parana, Uruguay, and Rio de la Plata. Chief lakes in Argentina are the Nahuel Huapi, Buenos Aires, San Martin, Viedma, and Argentino. The highest mountain peak in Argentina is the Aconcagua Mountain, measuring approximately 22,835 feet high!
Have you ever seen the Argentine flag? There are three horizontal stripes across it; the top and bottom stripes are light blue and the middle is white, with a golden sun in the center. Argentina's national anthem is called Oid, mortales, el grito sagrado Libertad. (Hear, O Mortals, the Sacred Cry of Liberty)
I hope you have enjoyed learning about the country of Argentina, I know I enjoyed doing the research. However, the best way to learn something is probably to go read and find out for yourself. Go to your local book store of library and look up books on Argentina to find out more information. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of great resources you could find on the subject of Argentina. I would strongly encourage finding some good reading on the subject if this article interested you and you would like to find out more.
Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoyed the article. Please post any accurate additional information you like. I would love to hear more. Thanks again, and please tell me what you thought about it, whether it is something you think I could improve for next time, or something you really liked about it. I am always open to feedback and suggestions!
