A recent Manhattan explosion caused a thunderous sound that was heard four blocks away all the
way down in Central Park.
An East Side Manhattan three-story doctor's office and beauty salon spewed of black smoke high above the building due to a large gas explosion. The building exploded only a few blocks from Central Park. I decided to look further into the situation, so I got a few facts from the recent articles regarding the explosion.
Dr. Nicholas Bartha caused the "thunderous explosion" on June 10, 2006. After a bitter divorce with his wife, Cordula Bartha, he decided to blow up the building, by opening a gas tank and letting the gas flow freely. He did not realize the damage that would be done, and the risk he caused to many lives, including his own.
When the explosion erupted, the landmark town house crumbled. Glass shattered not only in the building, but houses around it. The explosion injured up to 15 people, when balls of fire and bricks were sent up into the Manhattan sky, and into the upscale block. Many people in Central Park, just few blocks down heard the explosion.
One witness said it was "thunderous," "loud" and "startling". A local citizen a block down in an apartment said it was "like nothing he had ever heard."
A huge amount of civilians assumed the explosion was the result of terrorism, but it has been
confirmed that it was not, rather it was simply an act of stupidity.
Detectives want to get the real scoop, but they will have to wait, due to the injuries of Dr. Bartha. The town house was found to be worth up to $5 million dollars, and Dr. Bartha didn't want to give into his ex-wife, who it belonged to. The divorce was tough for her too, because she recently went through surgery as treatment for her breast cancer.
Though no lives were lost, the explosion rattled lives and shattered windows.
Thank you to the New York Times, for giving out the latest scoop.
