Hey, it's Spinner45, back with another "Important People" column. I was thinking about doing somewhere easy like Europe, which is full of dancers and athletes, but why not try something a little risky. Today I'm writing about India.

I found out that there are also plenty of important people in India. It wasn't totally easy, however, to find people that aren't Gods or myths to them. But, here's what I found out:

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (what a mouth full)

Gandhi was born into a family of Hindu merchants on October 2, 1869, in Probandar, India. He and his family had little money to spare. Gandhi married at age 13, and, when he turned 19, left India and went to England to study law at the University of London. The students did not like Gandhi because he was Indian, which is why Gandhi spent most of his time alone and reading books. At age 23, Gandhi went to South Africa to join a law firm, which is where he became the first nonwhite lawyer on the supreme court.

Jawaharlal Nehru

Nehru was a close friend of Gandhi and supported his cause greatly. Nehru was also a lawyer after studying law in England. He was very outspoken and was in jail several times between 1923 and 1945. It was during this period that he wrote his autobiography, "Toward Freedom". Nehru hoped to make India a society where there would be religious toleration. After India won it's independence in 1947, Nehru became its first Prime Minister, which he was until his death in 1964.

Indira Nehru Gandhi (no relation to Mohandas Gandhi!)

Indira was the child of Jawaharlal Nehru and spent most of her child life campaigning against the British. When she was 25, she married Feroze Gandhi. She was very active in independence movements, which landed her a year in jail. When she was released, she became the president of the Congress party. In 1966, Indira was elected Prime Minister of India. She held this office, until she was assassination by Sikh guards, Beant and Satwant Singh, who shot her 30 times (talk about anger issues, xD).

Well, those are a few important people in India. And you know what, all these people are related somehow: Gandhi is close friends with Nehru and Indira is the daughter of Nehru. Ha! Imagine that! Anyway, I'm going to write another "Important People" column, and I'd like for some of you to comment on what country you think I should do next! :)
