We make friends in a lot of different ways. We talk, we have things in common, we play sports together, we meet each other by chance . . . lots of different things. But who knew being friendly could be as simple as picking up your trash?
Like making normal friends, there are a lot of ways we can be friendly to the planet. And I am here, to show you a few.
We need to save our environtment now more than ever because of extreme global warming. Global warming is caused when human activity (use of electricity and pollution), and natural causes like volcanoes cause pollution which creates greenhouse gases, which go into the atmosphere and lock in the heat. Here are a few ways to help:
-Switch to energy efficient lightbulbs and christmas lights. If you switch just 1 or 2 lightbulbs, you would still be saving a small piece of out environment. Many people use LED christmas lights but put on twice as many which also isn't good. Less is more!
-Turn off. When you leave a room for more than 3 seconds turn off the lights and TV. Your parents will be happy because you're saving money on th electric bill, and everyone will be happy because you're one step closer to being friends with the environment!
-Unplug any appliances that you aren't using. Did you know that a toaster that isn't plugged in is still sucking the engery out of the wall? Maybe not. Keep reading, and you'll be an environmetal pro!
-Carpool, walk, or take the bus. By using public transportation, there aren't so many other vehicles on the road polluting the air. It's even better if you walk or run, because you aren't polluting at all and you're getting physcial exercise!
-Recycle. When we recycle, they waste doesn't sit in a landfill and pollute the air. The downside is, that not everythign is recycable. Generally, paper, plastic, cardboard, and glass are recycable, but check the container for the symbol which is three arrows that form a triangle. *TIP rinse out containers and break boxes flat before you recycle.
-Go Solar! This is extreme, but it's also really neat! They now have solar powered ipod and cell phone chargers! The panels use the suns energy and store it. When you plug in your ipod and cell phone it charges! Wouldn't this be great on the beach!
There are a lot of other ways you can be friendly, but these were just a few. Remeber to always be conscious of what you're doing, whether it's flicking on a light when the suns out, or leaving the toaster plugged in. If we all pitch in, we can all help!
