"Secret Files Of the Inquisition: The War on Ideas / The End of the Inquisition"

This is a broadcast of the final two episodes of a miniseries tells a story of holy wars and crusades, torture and terror, and the struggle for human rights and dignity. Based on previously unreleased secret documents from European archives, including the Vatican's, it covers events in medieval France, 15th-century Spain, Renaissance Italy and mid-19th-century Europe. In "The War On Ideas" the behavior of a Medici pope in Rome outrages a devout German priest named Martin Luther. In the face of the resulting Protestant Reformation, a fanatical pro-Vatican monk sets out to exterminate the Protestant heresy. On his path to power, the monk creates Roman Inquisition. The concluding program, "The End Of The Inquisition" is about the actual secret files of the Inquisition which were locked away for centuries. In the story a Spanish priest devotes his life to exposing these cruel deeds. While Napoleon was spreading the ideas of the French Enlightenment, Italy was invaded, the Inquisition abolished and the files were sent to Paris. Rated TV-PG
