Hello this is mokey6, reporting a tragic event in Minneapolis. This horrible event took place August 1, 2007. It is probably going to be a once in a life time thing, many people say.
I first found out when I was surfing the channels for something to watch. As a went by channel 40, I quickly flipped past it, just because it was a habit. See, I was looking through the channels for around 10 minutes, and was just pressing the up button on the remote out of boredom. So at first, I didn't react to what I saw. But then. I nearly screamed.
I quickly flipped back to 40, (because by then, I had gotten to 44), and gasped. On the channel 40, (which for me, is a news channel), was a picture of a fallen bridge, that had broken in many places right into the Mississippi river.
You can find information about this tragic event anywhere, on Yahoo, most likely your newspaper, or on a news station. I gathered a bunch of information to share with you all about it, from all of these places.
A large story from the horrible event was a bus of students that was over the river when the bridge fell. The driver reports that he simply thought they had gotten into a wreck, but as he began to feel the bus falling, he realized what happened. A student on the bus said that the driver ran to the back of the bus, kicked open the emergency door, and made sure that all of the students got out safe. He was considered one of the many heroes who helped others in this event. These students were heading back from a field trip. No one from the bus died, but 10 were injured.
In one spot were the bridge fell, it collapsed on top of a under-going train. But there were more concerns for the people over the water, than under the metal.
A man in a wheel chair was no "newbie" to near-death experience. Apparently he had been in an event that landed him in a wheel chair. Luckily, he got out alive. On his second near-death experience, he thought quick, to save his life. When he realized what was happening on the bridge, he started to get scared. He was heading right into a large break in the bridge, and slammed on the breaks. Unfortunately, this didn't stop it. He didn't slow down in time. So he drive into the wall, hoping that this would give a big enough impact to slow him down, and or stop him. He was correct. But he had to wait until someone came to help him out, for since he was in a wheel chair, and couldn't walk, and he couldn't get out of his car. But someone eventually came out and saved him.
Tons of cars and people fell into the river. An estimated 50 cars fell in at rush hour, (when the bridge collapsed). To the most unfortunate, not everyone came out alive. So far, five have been discovered dead, and eight are recorded missing. But the people who are working on this case, (which, by the way, is a whole lot), believe it's in the more 20s or 30s.
Here is are a couple of pictures:
I am just curious, what would you do if you were on the safe bridge, on the opposite side of it all? Completely safe? Would you pull over to get a good look, or would you continue driving out of fear that the same thing might happen to you any second? Please, post your thoughts in the BBS.
All together, roughly 100 were injured, but only 28 need hospital attention. Even though some died, and some got horribly injured, what happened, people who worked on the case considered something of a miracle. It was said that a lot more would have been expected to die or be horribly injured.
There is good and bad about the time that it collapsed. It collapsed because of the weight was too much for it to hold any longer, (because it was at rush hour), but there wasn't any momentum since it was basically bumper to bumper. That made it easer to stop your car from going into the river, and less likely.
