Love is quite a strange thing, is it not?
Commonly described as butterflies
Or stammering and sweating and lights getting hot
With gazes through starry eyes

I once was in love in this sort of a way
Amazed and convinced that he was the one
We talked for hours day after day
I knew something new had begun.

He was perfect in all I could see
Funny and moral and smart to boot
At night I laid there ridden with glee
He was not only perfect, but cute!

I loved him dearly, we both will agree
For six months with this I dealt
I never told, and neither did he
Of what towards each other we felt

But after a time, our butterflies left
And our excitement then did fade
I was in no way close to bereft
Nor grieved, and neither betrayed

It was then that I came to fear
I had been wrong all along
Whatever I had felt throughout that year
Was not where true love belonged

I'm not sure what happened during that time
For he began to grow cold
It was a minor, unfortunate crime
But I still sighed over times of old

He found another girl, a fair-spoken lass
I smiled and offered support
I spoke no regret, for our time had passed
Though I felt I had fallen short

Our five-hour talks turned five minutes long
He found other things to do
But my fondness for him stayed perfectly strong
If anything, I thought it grew.

And that is when I realized a strange new thing
That left me much to think of
Before infatuation had caused me to cling
But now - I was truly in love

And now I must say something important to you,
If you think you might be in love
This is a question that's long past due
Think of the answer thereof

If your love forsook you completely in all
And found another to woo
If your love almost never did call
Or far apart from you grew

Would you love him as more than a brother
When he drops you from love to sister?
Would you love him when he left for another?
Truly it is a mind-twister.

I tell you now, so listen close
That if then you would love him still
Never, 'till time fades into ghost
Will that true love be killed
