As many of you are aware, global temperatures are reaching new heights. Many scientists agree that this warming is due to an increase in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

As a citizen of the world, you may be asking yourself, "Is there anything I can do about it?" Global warming affects everyone and yes, there are lots of things you can do to help. Our very own Climate Center is where you can find out how.

First, you can travel into Whyville's past in Dr. Altostratus' time machine, take historic temperature and carbon dioxide readings in Whyville Square and at the Beach, and join in the discussion on whether Whyville is also affected by global warming.

Second, you can calculate how much carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, you are responsible for by calculating your "carbon footprint".

Many things contribute to your carbon footprint. How often you drive a car, use electricity or even eat food can increase the amount of carbon dioxide you are emitting into the air.

All you have to do is use the slider bars to estimate your weekly participation in the different activities. Be honest, there is no wrong answer! In Whyville, your base weekly carbon footprint is 80 lbs. Some activities such as driving your Scion increase your footprint; others decrease it, such as recycling.

Last but not least, you can help Whyville generate carbon-free electricity. Whyville's main generator burns coal to generate electricity. Unfortunately, burning coal emits more carbon than any other source of electricity. Now, you can help Whyville decrease its carbon emissions by inventing, buying, and wearing devices that generate electricity without emitting carbon. Find out more from the Carbon Couture at Akbar's Face Mall article.
