Hello Whyvillians, I'm here discussing a very important event that took place in the summer of 1988, a very destructive fire, also known as the " Yellowstone Wildfire". It burnt over 1.4 million acres and blackened over 41 percent of Yellowstone National Park. It was a very horrible and scary event in history.
Yellowstone National Park quoted, "If a fire burns less then 33,759 acres it doesn't need to be put out by firemen" and they stuck to that. 15 fires in the park only burnt about 100 acres, so they let mother nature put it out. Yellowstone National Park wasn't really known for having wildfires just helpful fires to nature, but like I said the summer of 1988 in Yellowstone National Park was different.
They soon experienced a severe drought and had many thunderstorms and lightning strikes without any rain. By July 15th, 1988 over 8,500 acres were burnt, but they stuck to the policy, until there were two more lightning strikes, making it became worse. Still with no water, a huge fire was in the making. A careless wood cutter started another fire, with two already coming to take down Yellowstone. Then the three fires came together forming one of the world's hugest wildfires.
By September, there were already 1.2 million acres burnt with the fire only starting about two-three months prior! Then there came a very sad day also known as "Black Saturday" when the Yellowstone fire was headed towards the houses. Many people evacuated and left Yellowstone. Firemen put sprinklers on many of the houses to prevent them from burning down. Only about one half of the houses got burnt down.
Then a very happy and exciting day came. During the afternoon, rain came! Finally there was hope in the little park called Yellowstone. Then by the next day snow came. By the end of the fire 1.4 acres were burned, and 36 deer, 12 moose, 6 black bears, and 9 bison died.
I put together some pictures I found of the Yellowstone National Park wildfire so you could realize the terror in the summer of 1988.
